Service Provider Batch Processing Services

Several XSEDE Service Providers (SPs) offer batch processing (aka, "job queue") services. A batch processing service allows individuals with an allocation on the resource to submit and manage computational jobs to one or more queues. A job typically includes a specification of the application or script to be run, input files, and the application or scripts processing requirements (number of compute cores, working memory, working storage, etc.). The jobs in each queue are scheduled according to a policy unique to the queue and are executed in the manner dictated by the scheduler. The job queue interface allows status queries and notification of job completion. Most job queues offer command-line interfaces (CLI) and require remote terminal (command shell) login to an interactive node on the system where the CLI is available.

Service Provider IaaS (Cloud) Services

Several XSEDE Service Providers (SPs) offer Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS, aka Cloud) resources. An IaaS resource allow individuals with an allocation on the resource to request and receive access to virtual machines with associated virtual networks, storage volumes, etc. The user's allocation is "charged" while the requested resource is reserved for use.

Service Provider Interactive Visualization Resources (IVR)

Several XSEDE Service Providers (SPs) offer Interactive Visualization Resources (IVRs). An IVR allows individuals with an allocation on the resource to submit and manage computational jobs to a batch processing service. In addition to ordinary batch processing, the IVR allows running jobs to accept network connections from external systems (visualization display systems) so that the data being processed can be transmitted and visualized. In some cases, the external network connections also allow instructions from the display system to be transmitted to the running job, enabling the computation to be "steered." Most (but not all) IVRs offer command-line interfaces (CLI) and require remote terminal (command shell) login to an interactive node on the system where the CLI is available. Others offer Web portal interfaces.

Service Provider Login Services

Most XSEDE Service Providers (SPs) offer remote login services that provide a command-line (aka, "shell") interface on one or more dedicated login nodes. The command-line interface allows users to execute commands and scripts on the login nodes. These commands include job submission commands that add jobs to the resource's compute queue(s). The commands can also provide access to the mass storage system(s) provided by the SP. Remote login services are restricted to use by users with allocations on the resource. User authentication (login) is via a username and password assigned by the SP or a username and password assigned by XSEDE, and also usually requires two-factor authentication (TFA) with a hardware or software one-time code generator.

Service Provider Mass Storage Systems

Some XSEDE Service Providers (SPs) offer mass storage systems. These systems provide orders of magnitude more data storage than personal or (most) academic departmental storage systems and are intended to facilitate high-end scientific computing and data analysis activities. These mass storage systems are nearly always accessible via the command-line interface offered by the SP's computation resources. Some SPs also offer other interfaces to their mass storage systems (e.g., GridFTP, Globus, and similar network interfaces).
