We are a unit of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Center traces its heritage to the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Laboratory founded at the University of Illinois by Professor Paul Lauterbur, a winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine. We are a state-of-the-art biomedical imaging facility committed to the development of cutting edge techniques which integrate magnetic resonance methods with other imaging techniques, including optical imaging, eye-tracking, EEG and MEG.

This dual source system is equipped with a four-circle kappa-axis diffractometer and motorized Photon 100 CMOS detector capable of shutter-less data collection. This state-of-the-art multipurpose system used Cu or Mo radiation and is primarily used for variable temperature, single crystal experiments on samples with a minimum dimension of 0.01mm. The system is also available for absolute structure determination of organics, wide-angle, powder, film, and fiber x-ray diffraction experiments on samples ranging from minerals to macromolecules.

Embodied Learning Augmented through Simulation Theaters for Interacting with Cross-Cutting Concepts in Science) is an NSF Cyberlearning research project conducted by an interdisciplinary team of learning scientists and computer scientists at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The goal of this project is explore ways that body movement can be used to enhance learning of "big ideas" in science. We are developing new techniques for tracking and recognizing the hand and body movements of K12 learners so that they can interact in expressive ways with simulations from a range of topic areas in geology, chemistry, biology, etc.

Located in Champaign, IL, EpiWorks is a semiconductor technology company that spun out of the late Professor Greg Stillman's research lab at MNTL. Stillman founded the company in 1997 with two of his graduate students, David Ahmari (PhD EE 1998) and Quesnell Hartmann (PhD EE 1998), who had developed novel material deposition techniques and designs for high-performance III-V epitaxial devices.. EpiWorks, which is led by Ahmari and Hartmann, is developing the next generation of infrastructure for communications, data, and the Internet of Things (IoT) backbone. The company designs and manufactures III-V semiconductor wafers for RF applications such as smartphones and tablets and photonics applications such as data centers and mobile photonics. With expertise in both device design and crystal growth, EpiWorks’ engineers tailor a wafer's atomically thin layers for each customer's specific needs, thus optimizing device performance.

This laboratory provides the school with a complete structural chemistry service. Located on the ground floor on Noyes Laboratory, the 3M Materials Chemistry Laboratory is housed in 2,700 square feet of space and staffed by two crystallographers. State-of-art hardware and software systems allow for detailed X-ray analysis of materials from minerals to macromolecules.
The x-ray facility performs a wide variety of experiments including small and wide angle x-ray scattering, in addition to powder, fiber, and single crystal x-ray diffraction. This facility helps maintain structural database systems that provide electronic search, retrieval, analysis, data, and graphics for inorganic, organic, and macromolecular structures. Facility personnel help investigators correlate x-ray diffraction results with other single crystal and bulk sample experiments including laser, EPR, NMR, and microwave. The staff also offers instruction covering x-ray diffraction experiments from design and data collection to analysis and presentation of results. Experimental data for research groups is routinely provided in less than one week. Alternatively, faculty, staff, students, and visitors are welcome to use facility equipment to collect their own data.
The George L. Clark X-Ray Facility is the x-ray diffraction and scattering component of the Center for Complex Structures. The laboratory maintains several experimental systems.
